Diango Hernández Diamonds 7, 2008 C-Print 20 x 27.5 in | 50 x 70 cm
Diango Hernández currently lives and works between Düsseldorf, Germany and Havana, Cuba. He was born in 1970 in Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, where he studied industrial design. His path changed when he opted for an artistic career and decided to travel abroad, before settling in Düsseldorf, Germany. Much of his work is inspired by his experiences in Cuba and deal with displacement and origin, although, it does not fall fully within the genre of diaspora. Hernández works like a craftsman, carefully constructing his Conceptual art by hand, acting like an inventor drawing up plans and creating a story. Hernández’s work has been included in many group shows in international institutions such as MOMA in New York and the Hayward Gallery in London, and has been presented at the 2005 Venice Biennale, the 2006 Biennales in São Paulo and Sydney and the 2010 Liverpool Biennial. His first major solo exhibition was at MART, Roveretto, in 2012.
